EXPLOSION-PROOF Explosion-proof PMDC motors allow safe operation in potentially explosive environments. These motors can be used in specific applications where vapors, gases or dust particles mix and form flammable or explosive environments covered by the classifications listed below. The motors have been tested and proven capable of withstanding internal explosions without bursting or allowing ignition to reach beyond the confines of the motor frame. All the motors are UL Listed. CSA certification is available.
DEFINITIONS OF UL LISTINGS Class I (Groups C and D) Class I is defined as locations where flammable gases or vapors are or may be present in the air and in sufficient quantities to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures. EP- environment, explosion-proof motors are listed for uses in Groups C and D. Group C covers atmospheres containing gasoline, hexane, naphtha, benzene, butane, propane, alcohol, acetone, lacquer, solvent vapors, natural gas or other vapors with an ignition temperature above 260° C. Class II (Groups F and G) Class II locations are defined as atmospheres where combustible dusts may be present. EP- environment, explosion-proof motors are listed for used in Groups F and G. Group F covers atmospheres containing carbon black, coal or coke dust. Group G covers atmospheres containing flour, starch or grain dust. Class II Underwriters Laboratories also lists a Class III location, which is an atmosphere containing easily ignitable fibers. UL allows motors that meet the Class II, Group G requirements to be used in these locations providing they are not fan-cooled type motors. EP-environment, explosion-proof motors meet this requirement. Frame size selection: |
